In these pASuras AzhwAr speaks about his dAsatva to the Baktas of BagavAn rather than to BagavAn Himself. In fact this is the essence of all SAstras. In our experience we too have love towards the objects connected with person whom we love. AzhwAr’s love extends up to BAgavatas and their sambandhis.

Oh! mA madalAi! You killed the rAkShasi pootana who had rolling red eyes and flowing red hair. Oh! dEvAdi dEva! You reside in tiruchchErai where there are tall buildings whose tops touch the moon traveling in the sky and where reside BAgavatas who worship His tiruvaDi praising Him. AzhwAr says He shall place the tiruvaDi of such BAgavatas on his head.

Once piLLai azhahiya maNavALa araiyar was going to a place via tiruchchErai. Since he was in a hurry he went through the fields rather than through the city. A Sree vaiShNava asked him ‘Why You do this sir? Can’t You walk through the streets and have darSan of emberumAn sAranAtha? He replied ‘taN SErai emberumAn tAL tozhuvAr kANmin en talai mElarE’. Didn’t AzhwAr say he would place the tiruvaDi of BAgavatas on his head? If i worship sAranAtha then AzhwAr has to bear my tiruvaDi on his head. Hence i did not do it.

i worship those BAgavatas who worship Him. He is the one who lives in tiruchchErai, who has periya pirATTi having beautiful brows and eyes in His tirumArbu, who killed kapittAsura with vatsAsura (like one removes a thorn with a thorn). This city where sAranAtha perumAn resides is beautiful one where the temple is as high as the sky and where the forests are full of scented flowers.

periyavAchchAn piLLai—AzhwAr says the BAgavatas are always in my mind that there is no time for him to think of BagavAn sAranAtha.

ampuruvam—Beautiful brow. If the word is split as ambu uruvam—The arrow like eyes.

The BAgavatas who worship sAranAthan of tiruchchErai—who cut off the arms and nose of soorpaNaka of ugly shining teeth—are greater than even nityasooris. The latter worship them in paramapada where there is nothing but bliss, but the former worship Him in this dark world where there are pleasures that lure anyone. Renouncing all these pleasures, steadfast in their Bakti, they offer flowers and holy water to Him and worship Him with Bakti. ‘pArkaDal pAmbaNaimEl paLLi koNDaruLum nAdanaiyE tozhuvAr viNNulArilum Seeriyar’—tiruviruttam.

The BAgavatas, the mahatmas of tiruchchErai speak and sing His glories like—Oh! Sree rAma! You discharged terrible arrows from Your bow and killed rAvaNa and His army, ruined the beautiful city of lanka. Oh! You are tArALum varai mArban! You are the Lord of the nityasooris; You are the greatest of all with wide spread glories’ and so on. AzhwAr says i shall never part with such BAgavatas who always speak His glories, guNas, chEShTitas, roopa, etc.

periyOr—BagavAn kriShNa says in Bagavat geeta ‘sa mahAtma’, ‘mahAtmanah’. AzhwAr refers to them as ‘periyOr’.

AzhwAr says he will be a dAsa to the BAgavatas of tiruchchErai emberumAn who took narasimha avatAra to protect His Bakta prahlAda and killed hiraNya. i shall always worship those BAgavtas who always think of His tiruvaDi. When i think of them my mind feels as it it has tasted the sweetest nectar. i shall not think of the bouddhas or jainas. Oh! emberumAn! Because of Your grace i am away from them and coming near You.

vandikkum maTTravar—How does this phrase indicate bouddhas? They chant some stOtras on Buddha. Wherein the word ‘vandE’ ‘vandE’ occurs very often. Hence vandikkumavar refers to bouddhas.

mAsuDambin vallamaNar—The jains practice ‘ahimsa’ to such an extent that they don’t take bath fearing it would kill the sweat born creatures. Hence they roam about naked with a naked dirty body.

In all the pASuras AzhwAr was telling he is the dAsa of His dAsas. Now in this pASura he says he is the dAsa of tiruchchErai emberumAn who lies in tiruppArkaDal on tiruanandAzhwAn and who is like dark sapphire mountain. BagavAn is worshipped by BAgavatas and BAgavatas are worshipped by AzhwAr. Hence there is nothing wrong in saying he is the dAsa of emberumAn. AzhwAr says when he thinks about the BAgavatas who shed tears with melted minds when they see the sAranAtha perumAn of tiruchchErai, his pApas vanish and the yama BaTTas run away. The city tiruchchErai which is beautiful with flowering trees which the bees seek, drink honey and sing--is resided by sAranAtha who is always worshipped by the nitya sooris.

uNNAdu vengooTTram--Does not mean one gets immortality on worshipping the BAgavatas but mean they are not tortured in hell. It may also mean they do not fear death which is inevitable. 'prAyO hi akrityakrityatvAt mrutyOrudvijatE janah kritakrityAyAh prateekShantE mrutyum priyamiva atitheem'--those who followed the injunctions of SAstra will receive yama as their dear guest.

tiruchchErai is a beautiful city with lushy crops in the fields. The karuneidal flowers grow as weeds in between the crops. The farmers pluck them out, keep them on one side and push them with their feet. The flowers get crushed, the honey ooze out spreading its aroma everywhere. Here resides sAranAtha whom the BAgavatas always meditate with melted hearts in their minds, i am a samsAri submerged in the duhKa sAgara finding no way to come out. But look at this! When i think of these BAgavatas my mind melts. It baffles that me, who is kaLLattEn and poyyattEn, should feel happy and light as i think of them!

kaLLattEn--My Atma belongs to BagavAn. But i think it is mine and say i am swatantra. Therefore i am a thief (kaLLA). Since i claim as mine what belongs to the other.

poyyattEn-- i never had any good thoughts about anyone. i spent my lie cheating and disliking others. Now when i think of the BAgavatas i feel instantaneously my mind is pure and clear.

tiruchchErai is the divya dESa where emberumAn sAranAtha resides for ever. The swans with their mates imitate the gaits of young ladies and sleep under the sweet mango tree. AzhwAr has sung ten beautiful pASuras on this emberumAn. The BAgavatas are requested to offer these pASuras at the tiruvaDi of sAranAtha.

There is no Pala mentioned in this pASura, as the pleasure of emberumAn, if the garland is offered to Him itself is the Pala. There is no need to gain anything else.
